January 26 - February 8, 2003 : Week 17 - 18
More firsts!

Eagan always seems to grow by leaps and bounds! During thest last two to three weeks, he has done, or at least, we've caught him doing, a bunch of "firsts"...

First time he...

    ...rolled off the couch.
    ...grabbed his feet.
...put just his thumb in his mouth (as opposed to his hand).
...put just two fingers (consistently) in his mouth in lieu of pacifier.
    ...got an ear infection.
    ...was put on antibiotics.
    ...got thrush as a result.
...reached for an object and grabbed it.
...transfered one object from one hand to the other.
...used his legs to bring something closer to his mouth.
...actively tried to hold his milk bottle.
...laughed more than twice. (and boy oh boy, is it a sweet sound.)
Sometime this period, he started to reach for things. A rattle, our faces, his bottle. He has been eating baby food for a while but he can't quite sit up by himself; so we feed him while he's lounging in his bouncy chair. And sometime this period, he learned to smile at us when he notices that we are looking at him or talking to him. Mainly, it's eye-contact that initiates a smile from him. To the delight of strangers, he would talk or smile when they stop to say "hi". Once he has a good hold on your fingers on either hand, he can be pulled up to a sitting position, and from there he can stand up (he's actually been doing this much earlier). His strong legs can support all his weight. Did I already mention that he has bodily launched himself off "the ground" from a sitting position?

His hair is also growing in a little coarser, and it is a chestnut brown.

Anyways, his 4-month well-baby appointment was on Feb. 3. He unloaded a big doodoo before I could change his clothes (which is a good thing), but he peepeed a huge one as we were putting him in his jacket as we were getting ready to go. And before he got weighed, he let out more pee. Even so, he weighed in at 18 lbs and 10 oz. He was measured at 26.5in. although his doctor said that he may not have been able to quite stretch Eagan out. His head was 16.875cm around. All told, Eagan was still proportional and above the 95th percentile! What a great little boy!

We're both so proud!

January 4 - January 25, 2003 : Week 14-16
I'm back at work, and this little baby is slowly turning into a little boy.

This month was full of new discoveries:

For starters, Eagan has outgrown his old car seat already before he can really sit up yet. If he was already 26 inches at the beginning of December, that means he had probably outgrown the car seat (which was for babies up to 26in. long) by January. So, for at least a week, Eagan was slouching in a toddler styled rear-facing car seat. The seat will accomodate him until he's about 50lbs...

I found that I was not immune to the separation phenomenon that grips most mothers when they leave their baby in someone else's care. On Jan. 6, Robt and I dropped off Eagan at daycare for the first time. I made it through the farewell and leaving the building in one piece. We got in the truck, and the sight of Eagan's blanket and the empty car seat was enough to start that spontaneous crying that I've heard about but didn't think would really happen to me.

Eagan found that his feet are attached to him. We found that he can hold his head level to his body when we pull him up to a sitting position. He actually really likes that. And when we pull him up to a standing position immediately after, a look of joy comes over his face.

Eagan can pout up his lips and start blowing bubbles or razzing up a storm.

He loves to eat baby food. He actually started last month. I bought a 4-pack of assorted vegetables. He liked all of them. He would eat all I would give him (a tablespoon or so) and still polish off 6 oz of formula. Eagan outgrew all the clothes for up to 6 month-old babies and has moved on to wearing 9-12 month sizes! It got to the point where I put an outfit on him just so I could say that he at least wore it once! The onesie shorts I bought for him before he was born, I had thought he would wear early summer as it was size "9 months", and it was really snug on him. He looked really cute in it though! The sun was out on Jan. 18, so his room was really bright, and was great for pictures (I actually used film that day). He looks like he can sit up pretty good right there on the glider. It's just that a second after this one, he slumped forward and got stuck. Haha! But the socks were a big hit. It really helped him notice that he has feet!

The set of pics above on January 5 sort of gives you an idea of what a full day with Eagan is like. He wakes up mellow and can entertain himself. Later on, as he continues to develop his dexterity, he starts looking outward and tries to grab stuff that seems new to him (like the hair on Robert's arm.) Heehee!

And my only disappointment was that he stopped taking the breast when he started sleeping overnight. I took the rejection okay. I was sad that I couldn't personally provide my boy the nutrients he needs to grow up big and strong, but at the same time, was pretty excited that he is growing up healthy and strong. Now... if only he can get over his nasal congestion! We're thinking that, with both of us growing up with sinus problems, it may spell the same for Eagan. :(

December 18 - December 25, 2002 : Week 11 - 12
Carpentersville, IL. Seattle, WA. Home for Christmas.

Okay, so now "everybody's" met Eagan. Except Caroline! I was making egg rolls and had the cell phone stuffed in my coat pocket -- which was in the closet -- so I never heard the phone ring. :( By the time I looked up to see what time it was, it was already three hours past our rendezvous :(

This week, Eagan got a bit more dextrous with his hands. He was able to grab stuff (like his "Fish Pal" from Grandma) and kinda tries to pull it up to his face. Although he always ends up putting his hand in first.

In the last picture of the above set, you can see the facial expression that eventually led to him razzing!

December 13 - December 19, 2002 : Week 10
Topeka, KS. Highland, IN. Eagan meets his Aunts, Uncles and Cousins for the first time.

Eagan slept through the night for the first time while we were in Topeka. I got really worried when I woke at around 6:30am realizing that Eagan didn't wake me up twice during the night like he always did. I can't remember now if he had fallen asleep beside me and I conked out or if I set him in the bassinet Ann borrowed from her friend for me... Though, I swear the picture of him on the Harry Potter sheets was when he slept through the night.

Oh, but did Eagan get so spoiled while we were out! :) hehe! Yet he remains such a good boy!

December 4 - December 12, 2002 : Week 9
Eagan discovers he can stuff his hand in his mouth, gets 5 shots and goes on his first flight.

It didn't take long for Eagan to go from "hey, I got hands" to "hey, I can put this in my mouth!" Around the time of his 2-month check-up, Eagan was already trying to chew on his knuckles. Which reminds me... at this same check-up we found out that he had grown 4 1/2 inches since he was born, gained 7lbs 5oz, and his head circumference increased by 3.125cm. That averages out to growing more than 1/2 an inch and gaining nearly a pound every week. I had been a little leery of him getting shots so young, but I really didn't have an argument. I just didn't want Eagan to be miserable. But I didn't have to worry. He was awfully sore after getting 5 shots (DTap, IPV, HIB Prevnar and HepB) but the following day, he was pretty much back to normal.

Again, I found stuff that I thought he wouldn't wear until later, like spring, or even summer, and found that he has just about outgrown it. This was just great when I packed his stuff for our 11-day visit to the Midwest. More than half the stuff I brought were already too small, and the things I thought he'd get to wear on the way back home was already snug.

And I had at first been worried about him on the flight. Nah. I had more difficulty dealing with the heightened security than dealing with this little boy. He *slept* through the flights. And the only reason he woke up was me picking him up to change his diaper and when he got hungry. It helped a whole lot that I got him his own seat though. Just gotta remember not to bring the base of the car seat with since that made it impossible for the carseat to fit on an airline passenger seat.
