DAY 5

Sick day. After coming back from the Whale Watch, I had a sore throat, and felt achy all over. It was a good thing we decided to sleep the rest of that day. After 18 hours of it, I felt better. Determined to sightsee at Volcanoes National Park, we took off some time after 9am and headed for the park.

We made it to the Visitor Center around10am and listened to one of the park rangers tell stories of the volcanoes using a great big relief map as his prop. It was fascinating. But I was getting chilly and a little impatient to get going (I was also starting to feel sick again.) If there was going to be a guided tour, I wanted to know. And it didn't seem like it. So we went in, got a map and printed guide, then went on our way.

We followed the Crater Rim Drive until it met the Chain of Craters Drive, stopping at the Halema'uma'u Overlook and Keanakako'i Crater along the way. We stopped at every crater on the Chain. At the Hiiaka Crater, a car passed us then turned around. The woman behind the wheel yelled over at us "Hey, Bungie!!" Robt and I looked at each other, I scrutinized the woman and wondered why she looked familiar. We were both thinking... "who the heck recognized us out here??" and realized that they were the couple we met up with at the beginning of Saddle Road -- the Greenbergs from Boston. :)

The two gave us some tips about the petroglyphs (it's 3 miles farther than posted) and the hike to the live lava flows and bid fare well. Cheered by the encounter, we made our way down towards the bottom of the road. We gathered our gear and walked the short way over to where the road was covered by lava and started the long hike.

About a mile and a half down, however, I just couldn't go on. Every cell in my body was screaming for me to collapse and sleep. And walking along and seeing the danger signs didn't help any either. I kept envisioning us falling into a deep lava tube and getting crushed or impaled on some sharp aa or stalagmites in some dark forsaken place -- or worse, thrown into the ocean to drown. So we turned back, took some more pictures where lava met road (there was a Japanese toddler marching on the lava behind me, right into the shot Robt was taking, chanting "ko...wa...ii....!" His otosan and okasan called him away, but he jumped right back in front of me before Robt could take the shot. We should have asked him to sit down with me. Hehe.) We regretfully drove back up, stopping to take a picture of the Holei Sea Arch, and made our way to the Hawaii Botanical Garden -- which was closed by the time we got there. I fell asleep as Robt drove us back to the resort...

Crater Rim Drive and the Kilauea Caldera

Totally bleak and smelling slightly of sulfur. The steam vents were niiiice. :)

Chain of Craters Road and back

The wind was picking up as we visited each crater. And it was surprisingly chilly.

As we approached the coast, the view just got more amazing. It was hard to believe how high up we were from sea level. It's interesting to know that the drive from the resort to this area had us driving at higher elevations than the highest points on Oahu. @_@

By the time we got 'home', my head was about to explode, my sinuses were so stuffed up.

The National Park Service has more info on this park.
